Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 - Print Article

The Mississippi High School Activities Association will bring to Mississippi, a sixth classification that will present a higher level of sports in the state starting the 2009-2010 school year. This will change the way enrollment is currently used to classify high schools in sports from 1A to 5A for Mississippi. A popular 6A school with national recognition is Hoover High School in Hoover, AL, under the Alabama High School Athletic Association flagship.

The following notice was posted to the web site of Mississippi High School Activities Association on May 16, 2008.

The MHSAA Executive Committee voted 14 to 0 to move to the 6A classification (beginning in the 2009 – 2010 school year)  system with 32 schools in the top two classes and the rest of the schools evenly divided among the other classes.  Enrollments and numbers of schools will change by fall 2008 when a final reclassification assignment will be made.

The Committee also approved moving to a final four format for the state basketball championships as a way to reduce travel costs and to accommodate the addition of a class to the competition.
